Super Eagles defender Ola Aina has expressed delight at returning to the national team after a lengthy absence, saying the quality of the new faces in Eric Chelle’s squad has impressed him ahead of Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar.

The Nottingham Forest full-back is back in the Nigeria set-up after an injury-hit period kept him away from international duty, including the last Africa Cup of Nations.
For Aina, returning to camp has brought both excitement and a renewed sense of responsibility as Nigeria begin another qualifying campaign.
“It feels good to be back,” Aina said. “I’ve been out for quite a while, so it’s nice to see the boys again and be around the team.”
Aina has also been encouraged by the fresh competition within the squad, with George Ilenikhena, Moses Usor and Isaac James among those receiving their first senior invitations for the Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau fixtures.
“There are some new faces and a lot of quality,” he said, welcoming the increased options available to Chelle.
The 29-year-old believes the time for introductions must now give way to business on the pitch, with the Super Eagles determined to make a positive start at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
“It’s back to business. We know what we have to do,” Aina said as Nigeria target maximum points from their opening qualifier.
Having missed the previous AFCON because of injury, the former Chelsea academy player is particularly eager to contribute to another qualification campaign.
Aina also insists every player selected by Chelle has earned the opportunity to represent the country, regardless of whether they are established internationals or newcomers.
“Everyone is here for a reason,” he stressed, adding that the players are prepared to give their best for Nigeria.
Madagascar provide the first examination on Friday before the Super Eagles travel to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
For Aina, however, the immediate priority is clear, enjoy being back, embrace the competition within the squad and help Nigeria begin their road to AFCON with victory.
