Nigeria’s fast-rising tennis sensation, Oluwaseun Ogunsakin is scheduled to join the country’s Davis Cup team in Morocco, ahead of this weekend’s World Group II games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Union Sportive des Cheminots.
Sports247 reports that Ogunsakin could not travel out with the squad because he only recently featured at Roland Garros in France and the US Open, but he had earlier been booked to join Nigeria’s contingent in Rabat, Morocco.
The team’s coach, Benson Ishicheli will tinker his squad rotations with Ogunsakin along with four other highly promising players – Daniel Adeleye, Canice Abua, Michael Emmanuel and Yusuf Abubakar – who departed Nigeria to Rabat with him on Monday.
Ishicheli disclosed that the mission is to secure victory over Morocco and advance to World Group I, as the Nigerian players aim to justify their acquisition of the Davis Cup spot for the first time in 30 years after a gritty victory over Uzbekistan in February.
The tactician added that the players will also seek to break a jinx that has seen Nigeria lose all four previous meetings against Morocco, but Ishicheli pledged that the story will be different with this weeknd’s encounter, ahead of which the team spent three weeks in camp.
After sharpening their skills and building team chemistry ahead of this weekend’s line-up of games, Ishicheli added that his players have what it takes to upstage their hosts and book a historic qualification spot in the Davis Cup World Group I.
