Man Utd 'shocked' as JJ Gabriel requests to leave in 'unprecedented move'

JJ Gabriel, the biggest prospect in Manchester United’s youth system, has requested to leave the club in a move that has left the Red Devils “shocked.”

The 15-year-old has been making waves internally at Man Utd and on social media for several years. Nicknamed “Kid Messi” ever since clips of his incredible technical ability went viral on social media when he was just nine years old, Gabriel is regarded as the biggest talent at Old Trafford.

The youngster has already trained with the senior team on numerous occasions, but due to his age, he has not yet made his first-team debut in a competitive fixture. Last year, Man Utd successfully fought tooth and nail to keep him at the club.

Gabriel was being courted by numerous suitors in the summer of 2025, but Man Utd director Jason Wilcox launched a huge charm offensive to convince the teenager, who has already been in the academies of Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham, to stay put.

The idea was for Gabriel to be integrated into the first team and handed a scholarship contract when he turns 16 in October, followed by professional terms the following year. Now, the prospect has thrown a spanner in the works.

Gabriel asks to leave Man Utd

According to The Telegraph, Gabriel has “sent a formal notice” to Man Utd to request that his registration be cancelled, which would see him become a free agent. This move, described as “almost unprecedented,” has left the Red Devils “shocked.”

The motivation behind this stunning decision is not entirely clear. Obviously, he wants to join a different club, but it is understood that he currently does not have a move lined up.

Premier League rules state that a youth player’s registration can only be cancelled “if everyone agrees.” Man Utd’s stance on the matter is unknown, but they retain hope that Gabriel can again be convinced to stay.

Should Man Utd refuse the player’s request, the Premier League may have to step in and arbitrate. Last week, Gabriel bagged a hat-trick against Sabah in a UEFA Youth League game and subsequently wiped any mention of Man Utd from his social channels.

The report quotes a source as saying that Gabriel leaving would be “like Barcelona losing Messi before he had played for them. It would be huge.” Arsenal, Barcelona, Man City and Real Madrid are among the clubs to have previously shown an interest in signing the 15-year-old.

Gabriel is the son of former Republic of Ireland international Joe O’Cearuil. You would hope that, thanks to his father’s expertise, the youngster is being correctly advised and isn’t making a decision he may come to regret.

It would not be a surprise if he were to end up at a Premier League rival, with high-profile academy transfers – previously something of a taboo – having become much more prevalent in recent years, often damaging relationships between clubs.
