Portuguese giants FC Porto have completed the signing of highly-rated Nigerian teenage striker Abraham Chibuike Obasi, handing the 18-year-old his first professional contract following his development through grassroots football in Nigeria.
Porto officially announced Obasi’s arrival on Monday, with the young forward initially joining the club’s Under-19 team for the 2026/27 campaign as he begins the next stage of his development in European football.
For Obasi, the move represents a significant leap from Nigeria’s academy system to one of the most established talent-development structures in European football.
The Nigerian youngster developed through Wonder Land FC, One Touch FC and Adoration FC before securing his opportunity with the Portuguese club.
“I’m very happy to be part of this team. It’s a dream come true,” Obasi said following confirmation of the move.
“I can’t wait to start playing and to give my best on the field. I will give everything to ensure that we all evolve.”
His arrival at Porto has not come completely out of the blue.
Obasi attracted attention during the 2026 Viareggio Cup in Italy, where he scored four goals in five appearances for One Touch and finished among the tournament’s leading goalscorers.
Porto’s coaches have also already had an opportunity to assess the Nigerian in their environment.
Obasi featured for the Portuguese club’s youth team during the Best Cup in Madrid in August, a competition Porto eventually won after defeating Espanyol 2-1 in the final.
The Nigerian forward was among the players introduced during that final as Porto completed a tournament in which they also overcame Real Betis and Real Madrid on their way to the trophy.
Having now secured a professional contract, Obasi is setting his sights on making an impact with the Under-19s.
“I want to score goals and help the team to ensure we keep moving forward,” he said.
The striker also described playing for Porto as a major opportunity and expressed confidence about what the team can achieve during the new campaign.
Obasi’s immediate challenge will be adapting to the demands of Portuguese football and establishing himself within Porto’s youth structure.
At just 18, there is still considerable development ahead before thoughts can turn seriously towards the senior team, but securing a professional deal represents an important first step.
The move also provides another encouraging example of a Nigerian youngster progressing directly from the country’s grassroots football system into the setup of a major European club.
For Obasi, however, the ambition is already clear.
From Wonder Land, One Touch and Adoration FC in Nigeria to wearing Porto’s famous blue and white, the journey has taken a major turn — and the 18-year-old now wants to ensure his goals take him even further.
