Liverpool may have endured a mixed start to the 2026-27 season, but they will be euphoric following their triumph over Chelsea in the race to sign Jeremy Jacquet.

The France centre-back looked destined to secure a Stamford Bridge switch in January, following lengthy talks with the Blues, but they were unable to finalise a transfer fee agreement with Stade Rennais, allowing Liverpool to swoop.

The two-time Premier League champions agreed a deal to sign the 21-year-old for €63.6 million this summer and he has been a revelation since his arrival at Anfield.

Jacquet has replaced the departed Ibrahima Konate as Virgil van Dijk’s centre-back partner this term and he has been arguably Liverpool’s standout performer during the early weeks of the new campaign, alongside Netherlands attacker Cody Gakpo.

The 21-year-old has been included in the starting XI in all five of Liverpool’s matches so far this season and he has been an assured presence next to Van Dijk at the back, despite his lack of top-level experience.

Jacquet had only made 57 first-team appearances before his Liverpool debut versus Newcastle United in August, yet he already looks at home in the Premier League.

Composed on the ball and defensively astute out of possession, Jacquet is the epitome of a modern central defender, and at just €63.6m, he already looks like a major coup for Liverpool. The Frenchman is still only 21 years old, yet he has all the tools required to become a world-class defender, and he is well on the way to achieving that status after just one month at Anfield.

Jacquet appears to be an upgrade on the error-prone Konate already, and Chelsea will be kicking themselves for failing to agree a deal amid their defensive woes under Xabi Alonso so far this season.

Liverpool celebrate huge transfer win

Liverpool spent big during Andoni Iraola’s first transfer window in charge and while a deal for Jacquet was finalised before his appointment, the Reds boss is unquestionably delighted by the club’s decision to sign him.

“He is a player that we knew about his qualities. He is confident on the ball, he is aggressive without the ball,” Iraola told reporters last week.

“He is quick and mentality-wise, you can see he is hungry to win things, to play minutes. Obviously I am very happy with him.”

Jacquet has seamlessly adapted to the rigours of Premier League football and, at just 21 years old, he looks set for a storied future career at Liverpool.

The Reds have arguably lost their reputation as the shrewdest English club in the market over the past few years, but signing Jacquet has already gone down as a major transfer win and his €63.3m price tag will soon look like a bargain.
