Global players’ union FIFPRO has called for urgent governance reforms at FIFA following the collapse of Gianni Infantino’s proposed “sell-off” plan.
The plan, which would have seen FIFA commercialize and sell parts of its competitions and data rights to private investors, reportedly failed to gain support from key stakeholders.

FIFPRO is demanding greater transparency, player representation on FIFA councils, and limits on the expansion of the calendar.
“FFE was an attempt to convert the game’s core competitions into an investable, tradable and undervalued financial asset for private capital,” the union said
“Any future proposal to grow solidarity funding should be built together, through trusted governance, not advanced unilaterally,” it said.
The controversy adds to growing tension between FIFA and player unions over workload and commercialization.

Despite FIFA withdrawing the proposal, the damage was already done and many football associations withdrew their support for Infantino’s re-election. He is eyeing another term as the FIFA President in 2027.
Recently, the French Football Federation withdrew its support for Infantino, stating that his initiatives damaged the image and unity of football.
