Manchester United are being linked with a potential move for Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch.
The 20-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence in recent years. Having starred for Nurnberg in the 2. Bundesliga, Jeltsch secured a €9.5 million transfer to Stuttgart in early 2025 and won the DFB-Pokal just a few weeks later.
Last season, he helped the Swabians qualify for the Champions League with a fourth-place finish. On his debut in Europe’s premier competition, Jeltsch played 71 minutes in a comfortable 3-1 win over Norwegian champions Viking FK this week.
He has started all of Stuttgart’s five games this term and is, unsurprisingly, regarded as one of the biggest talents in German football. Naturally, then, transfer speculation is never far away.
Despite links with moves to bigger clubs, Jeltsch stayed put this summer, and a transfer never appeared to be particularly concrete or close. This is expected to change next year, however.
Man Utd eye Jeltsch
Reports in recent days have suggested that Man Utd are among the clubs keeping a close eye on the 20-year-old’s development. Additionally, Juventus are said to be extremely keen to sign him, potentially as early as January.
TuttoJuve, however, has now pumped the brakes on these claims by insisting that Stuttgart have no intention to sell Jeltsch mid-season. Considering his importance to the team, this is in no way surprising.
Only an extraordinary offer could change that stance, but this is unlikely to materialise in January. Neither Juventus nor Man Utd have the funds to splash the cash on a centre-back, given that this is not a position that urgently needs reinforcements.
For both clubs, Jeltsch would represent an investment for the future rather than a vital signing that could make-or-break a season. As such, it is unlikely that they will make a move in the winter, unless there is an injury crisis.
Why Jeltsch shouldn’t join Man Utd
Nevertheless, the interest in Jeltsch is perfectly understandable. According to data analytics firm SciSports, the 20-year-old is one of the biggest defensive prospects in world football.
The experts suggest that only Pau Cubarsi, Neil Pierre, Karim Coulibaly and Luka Vuskovic have a higher potential than Jeltsch among centre-backs aged U21 or under. The gap between the German and the others is not huge – except for Cubarsi, whose ceiling is on another planet.
And yet, a move to Old Trafford would not be a great decision. SciSports’ Career Advice tool only gives the Red Devils a middling Club Fit rating of 64 out of 100 due to major concerns over his development prospects.
There is simply no need for Man Utd to sign Jeltsch, who is a right-sided centre-back. They already have plenty of those at the club, and bringing in the Stuttgart starlet would raise serious questions over their decision to sign Leny Yoro for €62m million.
If anything, Man Utd should keep the faith in the Frenchman. SciSports data suggests that he has basically the same potential as Jeltsch and that he is currently a more refined player.
This is supported by the eye test. For all of Jeltsch’s obvious talent, he needs to become much more consistent and level-headed with his decision-making. He has been guilty of a few blunders, which is normal for a centre-back of his age.
What he needs at this stage is to keep playing at a high-level in order to hone his craft. A move to Man Utd could be too big a leap too soon and significantly reduce his game time and stunt his development.
Ensuring a positive development curve should be the youngster’s main priority at this stage, and this may be best achieved by leaving Stuttgart for a club like Leeds or Newcastle. SciSports believes that this would be the ideal next step in his career.
The data boffins fear that he could be stagnating at Stuttgart. Out of the top nine U21 centre-backs with the highest potential in the world, Jeltsch has experienced the smallest positive development since the turn of the year.
So just because Jeltsch should steer clear of Man Utd, that doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t consider a Premier League move.
