Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are on the verge of selling their 12.8% stakes in Chelsea following lengthy talks with Clearlake Capital.
Boehly has been in discussions to leave Chelsea for the past two years, but negotiations have ramped up over the past few weeks and it’s understood that an agreement is now close to being finalised, as per Bloomberg and The Guardian.
The American businessmen were part of the BlueCo consortium that purchased Chelsea after Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the club in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but they are close to officially leaving the west London giants.
Clearlake Capital currently owns 61.5% of Chelsea, while Boehly, Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss each own 12.8% of the club. While Boehly and Walter are on the brink of selling their stakes to Clearlake Capital, Wyss’ stance remains uncertain.
Boehly and Walter are both set to make a profit on their investment and the deal will value Chelsea at around £5 billion.
Boehly, who is currently chairman at Stamford Bridge, has clashed with fellow co-owner Behdad Eghbali on several occasions during their reign in west London, with the club’s stadium understood to have been a key issue throughout the past four years.
As a result, Eghbali, the co-founder and managing partner of Clearlake Capital, has been eager to buy Boehly out for a while and an agreement is now reportedly close.
In a statement issued to Bloomberg, a spokesperson for Walter said: “This potential transaction values Mark Walter’s stake in Chelsea Football Club at a premium to his initial investment and is another successful sports investment for him.
“After this exit, Mr Walter intends to make future sports-related investments. Walter did not initiate the proposed transaction to sell his interest, which has been in the works for quite some time.”
Clearlake Capital are already in charge of the day-to-day operations at Chelsea, with Eghbali a leading figure, but the imminent deals to buy Boehly and Walter out will see their influence at the club increase even further.
It remains to be seen when an official announcement will be released, however Boehly and Walter are expected to depart Chelsea shortly.
What have Chelsea won under Todd Boehly?
Boehly initially became Chelsea’s sporting director following Abramovich’s departure as the club’s owner, although he soon relinquished that position and returned to his role as chairman.
The Blues have only won two trophies during Boehly’s time at the club – the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup in 2025 – and despite their underwhelming form in the Premier League, the west London giants remain one of the biggest teams in Europe.
Boehly, who is the co-founder, chairman, CEO and controlling member of Eldridge Industries, is the co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Walter, meanwhile, is the CEO of Guggenheim Partners and the CEO and co-chairman of TWG Global. He is the co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Sparks, TWG Motorsports, and the Professional Women’s Hockey League.
