As the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship comes up from this Friday to Sunday in Budapest, Hungary, Nigeria is already counting on a team loaded with ‘speed, experience and youthful talent’ to excel for the country.
Sports247 reports that the Nigeria contingent includes highly exposed male and female athletes as well as emergent ones, who officials believe will make the country proud during the impending three days of keen contests on the track and field.

This was made known by the chairman of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) media committee, Maxwell Kumoye, who disclosed that ‘a star-studded squad’ has already been selected to represent the country in the Hungarian capital during the highly anticipated maiden championship.
Kumoye added in a press release that, with some of the country’s best athletes already listed to feature during the global competition this weekend, there is a bright ray of hope that the contingent will return home with a huge haul of medals and outstanding performances.
He revealed further that the Nigerian team features a promising blend of elite stars and emerging talents for various individual races and the mixed relay as well as field events, led by women’s 100m hurdles former world record holder, Tobi Amusan, and men’s 100m ace, Kanyinsola Ajayi among others.
Ajayi is expected to excel for Nigeria in the men’s 100m and 4x100m race, while Amusan will feature in the hurdles and 100m mixed relay, with Udodi Onwuzurike also scheduled to compete in the men’s 200m and the 100m mixed relay events.
The AFN’s media officer added in his press statement, “Ella Onojuwvevwo will compete in the women’s 400m, while Ezekiel Nathaniel takes on the men’s 400m hurdles.
“Nigeria’s mixed 4x100m team comprises Alaba Akintola, Favour Ashe, Miracle Ezechukwu, Udodi Onwuzurike, Rosemary Nwankwo and Tobi Amusan, providing the country with another opportunity to challenge for honours on the international stage.
“The selection brings together several athletes who have already established themselves at major international competitions, with Ajayi, Ashe, Amusan, Nathaniel and Onwuzurike among the names expected to attract attention.
“With a combination of speed, experience and youthful talent, Team Nigeria will be aiming to make a strong impression at the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championships and add to the country’s growing reputation on the global sporting scene.”
