Alexis Mac Allister says he is “very sad” after being told by Liverpool that they are “not in a position” to offer him a contract extension.
The Argentina international has also revealed he had “a chance” to leave the club this summer but has reiterated that he “loves” playing for the Reds.
Mac Allister dropped the bombshell update on his future ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
Speaking in a pre-match press conference alongside manager Andoni Iraola, he said: “There was a chance [for me to leave this summer], like everybody knows.
“I received the news that the club was not in a position to renew my contract, which of course makes me very sad.
“I think everyone can see I give my 100 per cent for this club, every single day in training, I have good games, bad games. [But] I always give my best.”
Mac Allister learned of Liverpool’s stance over his contract from his father and agent, Carlos, adding: “I did not have any direct conversations [with the club]. They were with my agent.
“I don’t want to say things they never said, but they (Liverpool officials) said they were not in the position to renew me.”
Mac Allister said it made him “sad” to miss out on joining fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch by signing a new contract with Liverpool.
Hungary star Szoboszlai put pen to paper on a new long-term deal in July, while Netherlands international Gravenberch inked fresh terms in March.
Mac Allister said: “I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts, which makes me happy. [At the] same time it makes me sad I didn’t get mine.”

However, Mac Allister reiterated that “there is still time” for him and Liverpool to agree a new deal, with his current terms set to expire in 2028.
He added: “There is still time, I will give my 100 per cent until my last day. We will see what happens. There was options to leave this summer. Right now I’m in the right club.”
Iraola hails importance of Mac Allister
Liverpool boss Iraola revealed he had not spoken to Mac Allister regarding his contract situation but that he rates him “very highly”.
Iraola told reporters: “We all have personal situations with different contracts. The important thing is he wants to be here.
“We haven’t been together a long time but he has been an important player and I rate him very highly. There is still a lot of time to talk about those contract situations.”
Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton and Hove Albion for an initial €40.7million (£35m) in June 2023, signing a five-year contract.
He has registered 19 goals and 20 assists in 153 appearances for the Merseysiders, winning the Premier League title in 2024-25.
Liverpool have made an unbeaten start to their maiden campaign under Iraola, winning one and drawing two of their opening three games.
