There has been a lot of debate around the Leinster squad for the forthcoming season and whether head coach Leo Cullen has the personnel — and squad depth — required to go deep in the Champions Cup and URC.
Cullen has lost some big names in the summer, with James Lowe, Rieko Ioane, Ciarán Frawley, Luke McGrath, Rabah Slimani and Will Connors seeking pastures new, for various reasons.
There has been no marquee signing this time around. We’re heading into a World Cup year so another superstar All Black will not be strolling through the doors of Leinster HQ in UCD any time soon.
Jordie Barrett and Ioane, who both joined the province on six-month sabbaticals in recent campaigns, were statement signings.

Another blockbuster addition looks unlikely at this stage.
There have been rumours circulating for a while that Cullen is plotting a swoop for Springbok midfielder Jesse Kriel. At this point in time, it’s merely social media speculation.
Now, Cullen does have some heavy hitters back on board. Andrew Porter, Ryan Baird and RG Snyman missed most of the last season due to injury setbacks. That’s a serious forward trio.
Apart from that, Leinster will be relying on a depleted squad to go again. Not ideal when you look at what the heavyweight recruitment taking place in France at the moment.
If Leinster, who will return to their newly-renovated RDS home this term, want to finally scale that Champions Cup-shaped mountain after almost a decade of European heartbreak, salvation will have to come from within.
Which brings us to Caspar Gabriel. There has been a lot of hype around this talented, Austrian-born out-half for quite some time.

Indeed, Seán Skehan, his head coach during his formative years at Terenure College, once hailed him as the most talented schoolboy he had ever seen.
Quite the statement, when you consider the sheer scale of talent which has flooded through the fee-paying, south Dublin schools system over the past two decades.
Gabriel, 20, is still learning his trade. There are big plans for him at Leinster, mind. This prodigiously talented playmaker could be the spark the club sorely needs.
To date, he has made only one senior appearance for his province, off the bench in a URC win against Zebre in October 2025.
He was handed the No10 shirt by Cullen in last weekend’s pre-season hitout against Lyon and, by all accounts, he went well.
The Leinster management aren’t short of options at out-half.
Sam Prendergast and Harry Byrne are both on the books, while Joey Carbery has arrived back for a second stint following spells at Munster and Bordeaux.
But there is still a feeling amongst people close to the Leinster operation that Gabriel could play a big role this time around, potentially as a free-roaming, playmaking full-back.
There is a lot to like about his game. The wunderkind has size, speed and power. His passing game is top drawer while he also possesses a siege gun of a left boot, which could come in handy now that Lowe has departed for Japan.
Cullen will need to lean on his academy prospects more than ever.

Andy Farrell, who now has one eye firmly on next year’s World Cup in Australia, will want his Ireland frontliners carefully managed.
That means that Prendergast and Byrne will be lightly raced in the coming months.
Carbery, who is essentially the biggest signing Leinster made in the summer, is still recovering from a long-term knee injury.
So, we could be seeing more of Gabriel in the Leinster senior team.
He has a high ceiling and, unlike the majority of his teammates who thrive in structure, Gabriel is at his best when things get messy on the field. He is an instinctive, off-the-cuff operator — the kind of player that Leinster have been crying out for.
Gabriel’s scenic and unorthodox journey to the top level might go some way to explaining his unconventional style.
Austria is hardly a rugby hotbed. That nation is currently ranked 64th in the global rankings, just above Latvia, Zambia and the Cook Islands.
But Gabriel was steeped in rugby. His father, Thomas, set up the first rugby club in Vienna: Donau Rugby Club. Gabriel Snr was also a former president of the Austrian Rugby Federation.
It was a chance meeting with an Irish publican at a Viennese pub which set this remarkable story in motion.
The owner, a member of Terenure, suggested that the local club should head over to Dublin on a tour.
Next thing, a 14-year-old Gabriel was lining out for Donau’s U16 team against the Terenure College transition year side.
After that game had finished, everyone wanted to know who was the young out-half in that Austrian team?
Gabriel was offered a place in the school. A teenager with barely any English found himself boarding with the families of schoolmates in Dublin.
All the Covid disruption didn’t help the acclimatisation process, but Gabriel, who is clearly a tenacious character, pushed though and he began to make a name for himself in the Leinster underage setup.

He was offered an academy deal straight out of school, a very rare occurrence. He finally became Irish-qualified January 2026.
A trip back home to Vienna midway though the pandemic briefly disrupted the residency process, which ruled him out of Ireland U20 contention at one stage.
Gabriel is well regarded, however. Munster were understood to be keen to secure his services last year.
He was seen as the perfect back-up to Jack Crowley. But Leinster’s young prodigy, despite the sizeable list of top-class fly-halves in the provincial queue, decided to stay put.
Leinster have continued to invest in their young star.
Last season, he and fellow academy player Josh Ericson spent some time with Melbourne Storm, the Australian rugby league giants who play in the NRL, on an exchange programme.
He has impressed with Terenure in the AIL, too.
Gabriel’s skillset has been apparent in that competition for quite some time, but observers have been struck by his defensive grit and willingness to get stuck in as well.
Leinster may have been quiet on the transfer front of late, much to the annoyance of their fanbase.
The province may just have an ace up their sleeve this season, however, and Gabriel could be their secret weapon. Watch this space…
