Jamal Musiala collapsing twice in the space of four days has left Bayern Munich stunned, according to honorary president Uli Hoeness.

Musiala collapsed against RB Leipzig at the weekend, having suffered a similar malady in a friendly win over Heidenheim the previous Tuesday.

The incidents have led to serious concerns over the health of the 23-year-old Germany international, with Hoeness describing them as “tragic” and also revealing that Bayern had prior knowledge of the issue.

“We have been aware of the problems for some time. But last weekend against Leipzig was the first time it happened on the pitch and was visible to everyone,” he explained to Sky Sport Deutschland.

“We thought that if it didn’t happen again so quickly, the medication he is taking would help. But when it happened again four days later, in the same way, I was stunned.

“We expected everything, but not this accumulation of problems. It is a tragedy, especially for Jamal.”

Musiala ‘optimistic’ and says he faces ‘no further health risks’

Musiala released a statement about his condition on Instagram and has moved to assure Bayern fans that he is coping well with his current issues, which pose no further health concerns.

“First and foremost – I’m doing well! I’m especially grateful for all your messages and support! I understand that many of you are worried. Today, I want to put your minds at ease and explain a little more,” he said in a statement.

“I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary but easily treatable episodes of absence, which are caused by a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the episodes that have occurred recently, such as against Leipzig and now in Heidenheim.

“I know that they may seem scary at first glance – but for me, they are currently part of my everyday life. I am receiving the best possible medical treatment for this and am very optimistic.

“The important thing is that there is no further health risk. In close consultation and regular communication with the experts, it was my personal wish to face this challenge and, with the approval of the neurological specialists, continue to focus on what helps me most in my recovery: simply living my everyday life and continuing to pursue my passion of playing football. I have taken responsibility for that decision. Overall, I have a very good feeling and believe I am on the right path.”

Planning ahead with Bayern

Musiala, who came through Chelsea’s academy before joining FCB, is currently the world’s seventh-most valuable footballer, boasting an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €114 million.

He remains under contract with Bayern until 2030, and while there were surprise links with a move to Turkey in the summer, there is no prospect of the player departing the Bundesliga giants.
