Former Ireland player Brian Smith dies aged 59

Brian Smith, who represented Australia and Ireland at test level and was later attack coach for ​England, has died from cancer at the age ‌of 59.

Smith won six caps for Australia in 1987, including ​at the first World Cup, before moving to study at Oxford and play nine ⁠Tests for Ireland.

In 1991, Smith changed codes and joined the Balmain Tigers rugby league team in Sydney, where he played out his career.

After retirement, ​Smith moved into rugby union coaching and was an assistant under England head coach Martin Johnson from ‌2008 ⁠to 2011.

Smith also had a spell as director of rugby at London Irish.
