Tottenham’s struggles last season were perhaps best demonstrated by Xavi Simons, whose transfer value has plummeted in the space of six months.
While the attacking midfielder’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) was estimated at €79.8 million at the beginning of this year, that figure has since dropped €52.4m.
This drop in value of over €27m does not come out of the blue. The decline is entirely due to an extremely disappointing season at Tottenham Hotspur, which was marked by underwhelming performances, severe injury woes, and missing out on the World Cup.
The current situation stands in stark contrast to the period before his arrival in London. After a strong phase in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig and a successful European Championship in 2024, Simons’ market value peaked at over €80m.
Simons made the move to Spurs last August for around €60m. However, the former RB Leipzig player failed to live up to the high expectations. During his first season in England, the playmaker made 39 official appearances, in which Simons managed to find the net only five times. In the league, his contribution was limited to two goals and five assists in 28 matches.
Physical misfortune
In addition to the struggling sporting performances, Simons’ debut season was overshadowed by physical misfortune. After an earlier ankle injury in January, which sidelined the No.7 for nearly two weeks, a decisive blow struck him in April.
In an away match against Wolves, the right-footed player tore the ACL in his right knee, ending his campaign – and likely his year in a competitive sense. Simons missed the World Cup, a competition in which he was expected to play a key role for Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands.
Due to the severe knee injury and the subsequent surgery in May, Simons’ transfer value has now dropped to its lowest point since 2024. It also appears that the decline will continue in the coming months.
Although there were rumours earlier this summer about interest from city rivals Chelsea, a departure from North London is currently out of the question. The injury makes a transfer impossible. Instead, Spurs want to get the Barcelona youth academy product fully fit again for the second half of the season.
Hope for Xavi Simons
Despite his sharp drop in value, Xavi Simons’ prospects in London are not hopeless. Manager Roberto De Zerbi still regards the international as a crucial creative link for the club’s future. With a contract running until mid-2030, the London team has full confidence that he will return stronger than ever.
Although Simons cautiously resumed group training last month, he is currently continuing his rehabilitation primarily individually. It is expected that the technician will not be able to rejoin the squad fully match-fit until around February next year.
