Coventry City are reportedly among the clubs to have approached Chelsea over a possible summer move for Mykhailo Mudryk.
The Ukraine forward hasn’t played a competitive match since November 2024 after testing positive for banned substance meldonium, but his four-year ban has officially been cut short and he was cleared to play last week.
Mudryk, who has been training alone during his absence, has travelled to Hong Kong to join his Chelsea team-mates for the remainder of their pre-season tour and he could make his first appearance for the club in over 20 months during friendlies against Juventus, AC Milan or Johor Darul Ta’zim.
However, Chelsea have signed Morgan Rogers and Geovany Quenda to bolster their forward options so far this summer and with fellow wingers Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens also at the club, Mudryk is unlikely to play a prominent first-team role this season.
As a result, rumours suggest that Chelsea are desperate to offload him on a season-long loan deal, with the Blues eager for Mudryk to play regular football in order to regain his form and eventually be re-integrated into the team at Stamford Bridge.
Several clubs across European football have already approached Chelsea over a potential deal, with three Premier League teams interested in signing the 25-year-old, including Frank Lampard’s Coventry.
Lampard worked with Mudryk during his brief spell as Chelsea interim boss during the 2022-23 season and he is keen to be reunited with the Ukrainian, as per The Sun and The Daily Mail.
Coventry have signed Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Frank Onyeka so far this summer, ahead of their first Premier League season since 2000-01, and Lampard is reportedly eager to use his contacts at Chelsea to finalise a deal for Mudryk, who would compete with Ephron Mason-Clark for a starting XI place at the CBS Arena.
What has Xabi Alonso said about Mykhailo Mudryk?
Following confirmation that Mudryk is free to return to competitive football, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso told reporters: “To be honest, we were not expecting to have this great news at this moment, so we are very happy. We feel that he will be working with us.
“I remember watching him in Shakhtar [Donetsk], the impact he had, how quick he is, how good in one-on-one situations, how he could create a lot of situations on his own, and he’s a special player, but he will take time for sure.
“We are happy for him, especially for him, because probably we are not able to understand what he has been through in this time. We want that he feels part of a team, because he has been training on his own for a long time, and that we have the support from everyone, from the club, from the team-mates, from the staff, and for sure, it will take time. Once he is with us, we will see how things develop. He is coming to Hong Kong, but I haven’t spoken to him yet.”
When asked if Mudryk will remain at Chelsea for the upcoming season or be sent out on loan, Alonso said: “We need to see. It’s too early to tell, to see how he is in terms of fitness, in terms of this game time that you need to be involved again, so it’s still too early to tell. It will take time. For him it’s a massive change.
“He trained on his own every day, and it had to be really, really hard, because he wanted to play football, he wanted to be part of a team, and he was not allowed to do that for such a long time. So once this big change has happened, now things will move on, and afterwards we will see if it’s quicker, if it’s slower, but we need to be aware of that.”
