When the curtain falls on the 2026 Commonwealth Games at Sunday’s Closing Ceremony in Glasgow, Team Nigeria will leave Scotland with far more than a suitcase full of medals.
The country will depart with renewed belief.
It will leave with new champions.
It will leave with broken records, ended droughts, history rewritten and perhaps most importantly, the conviction that Nigerian sport is entering a new era.

Glasgow 2026 was unlike previous Commonwealth Games.
With only 10 sports and 215 medal events—the smallest programme in decades—every podium finish carried greater significance because opportunities to win medals were fewer than at recent editions.
Yet Nigeria still emerged as one of the Games’ standout nations.
The Games Where Nigeria Won Across Almost Every Major Discipline
For years, Team Nigeria’s success at major Games was largely associated with weightlifting and a handful of athletics events.
Glasgow changed that narrative.
Medals arrived from athletics, para athletics, weightlifting, para powerlifting, judo, while Nigeria also reached historic finals in swimming, relay events, wheelchair basketball and several track disciplines.
That breadth of success is perhaps the clearest sign that the country’s sporting base is expanding.
