PGA Tour golfers Michael Kim and Si Woo Kim had a wild time trying to get some Korean barbecue in Detroit – accidentally ending up in Canada after making a wrong turn.
Kim detailed the story in a lengthy social media post, explaining that he and Si Woo crossed the border without him having his passport with him.
He had to plead with border security officials to let him back into the United States, he said – while also being searched to make sure he wasn’t posessing drugs or weapons.
‘There’s a solid Korean bbq restaurant I always go to when I’m in Detroit. I text Si Woo, wanna grab dinner tonight at this place? He goes sure,’ Kim’s tweet began.
‘He searches the name of the restaurant on Google Maps, and without much thinking starts driving. But before it’s too late, he realizes that he’s about to go across the US border into Canada! There was a restaurant under the SAME NAME closer to him in Canada.
‘He doesn’t have a passport, just his wallet. He tries to turn back, but it’s already too late, it’s a one way and there are multiple signs telling him he can’t turn back.’

Kim revealed Si Woo Kim had to do the talking at the border to return to the United States
Kim and Si Woo – who are not related – had to then travel into Canada and join the line of people looking to travel back across the border and into the United States.
But given that Si Woo didn’t have his passport with him, the pair had some explaining to do to the officials before they made it back over to the other side.
‘He (Si Woo) drives across, waits in line for 45min,’ Kim continued. ‘He finally gets to an officer and he tries to explain.
‘He’s super nervous but tries to explain what happened. He points to his courtesy car and says “I’m here for the golf tournament”.
‘This officer is not sure what to do so they drive the car to the side and calls another officer… then another… then another until 8!!! officers are surrounding his car and talking to him and each other.
‘They check his cars for weapons, asks him if he has any drugs or weapons, stuff like that and they finally let him thru.’
All was well in the end for the pair as they finally made it to the restaurant they had planned to be at all along before the accidental detour.
‘Night ended with a nice kbbq dinner about 90 minutes later than we had originally planned,’ Kim said. ‘Never a dull moment with Si Woo. Thanks for the content my guy.’
Si Woo later added his own comment on the remarkable tale, writing on Instagram: ‘Made it back safely without passport.’
The two golfers are in Detroit for the Rocket Classic this week on the PGA Tour, held at the Detroit Golf Club.
