“Jesus!”…That was the heartfelt cry from Goodness Nwachukwu moments before she unleashed the throw that rewrote the world record books and delivered Nigeria’s seventh gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
With faith, determination and months of preparation behind her, the Nigerian para-athletics star produced a stunning 39.66-metre throw in the Women’s Discus Throw F42-44/F61-64, sending the Scotstoun Stadium crowd into celebration as the scoreboard confirmed “NEW WR”.

Moments later, an emotional Nwachukwu told Sports247 that the achievement was driven by quality preparation and the motivation provided by the National Sports Commission (NSC).
> “Our preparation was good. I was determined to win today because of the incentives attached. But in all, the NSC really motivated us right from the training camp to the Games, and this is the end result,” Nwachukwu told Sports247.
The reigning Commonwealth champion accumulated 1,130 points to finish comfortably ahead of Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye (931 points), while Bree Cronin claimed bronze with 861 points.
Nigeria also had another encouraging performance through Destiny Agbo, who recorded a personal best of 33.79 metres to finish fifth.
Nwachukwu’s latest triumph takes Team Nigeria’s gold medal tally to seven, adding another historic moment to what has become an outstanding campaign for the country in Glasgow.
