Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria Athletics Suffers Injury Blow as Israel Okon Out of Glasgow Games

Team Nigeria’s athletics contingent has been dealt a significant setback ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with promising sprinter Israel Okon ruled out of the competition due to injury.

Okon confirmed the development in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, announcing that he will no longer be able to represent Nigeria at the Games.

The talented sprinter had been entered for the men’s 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay, where he was expected to strengthen Nigeria’s medal ambitions.

Despite the disappointment of missing the Games, Okon reflected positively on what has been a breakthrough 2026 season.

He celebrated achieving personal milestones by running under 10 seconds in the 100m and under 20 seconds in the 200m for the first time in his career.

He also expressed confidence in his teammates, wishing Team Nigeria and his fellow athletes a successful campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Okon’s absence leaves a gap in Nigeria’s sprint squad, especially in the relay team, as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the coaching crew look to adjust their plans for the competition.

Nigeria’s athletics team, which boasts several world-class sprinters, remains hopeful of delivering strong performances despite the loss of one of its rising stars.
