Niger Delta activist and traditional ruler Asari Dokubo has shared a personal account of his early life, revealing that he once turned down an opportunity to study in the United States despite strong encouragement from his father.
Dokubo made the revelation in a video shared on Facebook on Saturday, July 18, 2026, where he reflected on his upbringing, personal beliefs, and some of the major decisions that shaped his life. According to Dokubo, his father wanted him to travel to the United States for his education, believing it would provide greater opportunities for his future. However, he said he respectfully declined the offer because he felt it did not align with his personal convictions at the time.
“My father asked me to go to America for school, and I replied, ‘No, I’m not going,’” Dokubo said, explaining that he made the decision after carefully considering what he believed was best for his life.
He noted that life often presents people with opportunities that require difficult choices and that the decisions individuals make can significantly influence the direction of their future. While acknowledging that many people regard studying abroad as a valuable opportunity, Dokubo stressed that it is equally important for individuals to remain true to their principles and make decisions based on their own goals rather than external expectations.
