The World Cup is almost over but there are still a few members of Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea squad with matches to play over the course of the weekend
The future of Trevoh Chalobah is still undecided with around a month-and-a-half remaining of the 2026 summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old defender has multiple admirers – two of them being from Italy in Como and Inter Milan – with Chelsea open to selling him before the September 1 deadline. Despite being a virtually ever-present figure in the Blues ‘ back line last season – making 47 appearances over the course of the campaign – the west Londoners are keen to cash in on Chalobah this summer.
The Cobham graduate has less than two years remaining on his Stamford Bridge contract, albeit there is an option to add a further 12 months, and Chelsea have made their stance perfectly clear. Como, as it stands, appear to be the front-runners in the race to sign the central defender.

However, Como have seen two offers rebuffed by the west Londoners, who, sources say, would accept a bid in the ballpark of £30million-£35m. There are said to be a couple of other clubs still in the race to sign the defender who has been on Chelsea’s books for the best part of two decades. Inter are thought to be one of them, as well as an unknown side.
Chalobah himself is said to be keen on a move to Italy this summer, with the centre back open to taking an unfamiliar, yet exciting step in his career. Things could accelerate once his participation at the almost-concluded World Cup is over.
Initially, the versatile Chelsea defender was not even supposed to be in North America with the England camp but he was a late addition after Tino Livramento was ruled out of the competition due to a calf injury. Rather controversially, Chalobah, a natural central defender but can play on the right side of a back four, was brought in ahead of a natural full back to replace Livramento.
Chalobah, however, has not played a single minute at the World Cup. There is, though, one more opportunity for the Sierra Leone-born England international to make his debut in football’s most prestigious competition, with Thomas Tuchel ‘s team in action this evening (Saturday) in the third/fourth-place play-off against France following the Three Lions’ dramatic semi-final defeat to Argentina earlier in the week.
Tuchel, one would presume, is likely to give those who haven’t had a chance at the World Cup the opportunity to play in Miami in front of those England supporters that have chosen to stick around in the United States. Chalobah will surely be one of them – and if so, newly-appointed Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will get the chance to watch the defender live for the first time since taking over at Stamford Bridge.
A decision on Chalobah has already been made but watching him could prove useful for Alonso just in case he does stick around. However unlikely that does at this point in time.
