A powerful earthquake struck off Mexico’s southern Pacific coast on Friday, with tremors felt in parts of Guatemala and El Salvador. The magnitude 7.4 earthquake was recorded near Puerto Madero in the state of Chiapas, according to Mexico’s National Seismological Service.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the earthquake as a magnitude 7.3 event, with the quake occurring at a depth of about six miles (around 10 kilometers) near the Mexican coast.
The strong shaking prompted concerns over a possible tsunami threat across parts of the Pacific region, including areas near the earthquake’s epicenter.
Is there a tsunami warning?
The National Weather Service (NWS) Tsunami Alerts issued a tsunami information statement, clarifying that a tsunami was not expected for areas including California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska.
In a post on X, NWS Tsunami Alerts said: โTsunami Information Statement: M7.4 Near Coast Of Chiapas, Mexico 0749PDT Jul 17: Tsunami NOT expected; CA,OR,WA,BC, and AK.โ
