The Tottenham Hotspur captain has been linked with a transfer out of the north London club this summer after the World Cup
Roberto De Zerbi should put an arm around Cristian Romero and keep him at Tottenham, believes former Spurs star Teddy Sheringham.
Romero is set to take on his Tottenham team-mate Pedro Porro in Sunday’s World Cup final as Argentina and Spain meet in New Jersey with the 28-year-old club captain aiming to become a back-to-back winner of the tournament, having done the same in the Copa America.
Back at club level, the Argentine is being tipped to complete a transfer out of the north London outfit this summer with the likes of Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid and various Italian sides all linked with his signature. Romero only signed a new contract a year ago, but De Zerbi has in recent weeks brought in his former Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke for £52million as well as the more left-sided Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi on a free transfer.
Sheringham believes though that Romero, after yet another impressive international tournament, is better to have on your side than lining up elsewhere.

“Listen, I wouldn’t want to play against Cristian Romero. He might be a loose cannon but he’s a really good player. He’s a World Cup winner and you don’t win a World Cup being an average player.
“You’ve got to be careful what you’re doing if you’re Tottenham just getting rid of him because he’s had a bad spell. He could go somewhere else like Barcelona and Real Madrid and hit it off,” the former England striker said in association with ComeOn .
“I played with Roy Keane and he got plenty of red cards in his time, and you’ve got to have your leaders and your naughty players sometimes to stamp things out, otherwise people walk all over you, but it’s got to be done in the right way.
“I hope Roberto De Zerbi can put an arm round Romero but there’s always so much speculation about his future isn’t there so maybe the writing is on the wall.”
