Former England striker Michael Owen has responded to the mounting criticism facing Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel by insisting there should be no foreign coaches in international football.
Ex-Chelsea boss Tuchel is under fire after England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina on Wednesday night, heavily criticised for his tactics as the reigning world champions came from behind to win.
England led through Anthony Gordon’s close-range finish, but from that point onwards England sat back before Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, in injury time, struck to send them into Sunday’s final against Spain.
England’s elimination means that no country has lifted football’s most coveted prize with a manager who isn’t from their country, with Luis de la Fuente leading Spain and Lionel Scaloni the Albiceleste on Sunday as the European and South American champions meet in the final.
Reacting to a post highlighting that World Cup-winning bosses have always been native to their countries, Owen responded: “There should be no such thing as foreign coaches in international football.”

However, Tuchel isn’t going anywhere just yet. He signed a new deal with the FA until 2028 pre-tournament and maintains the backing of the FA and its chief executive, Mark Bullingham. And the German insists he has no plans to resign.
“First of all, the World Cup is not over,” Tuchel responded when questioned about his future. “There is still a match to play, that we are not looking forward to so much to but there is still a match to play.
“Of course then we keep on going. I have a contract until the home Euros and I’m looking forward to that even like now it is difficult to look that far ahead.”
Bullingham released a statement following England’s elimination, stating: “It is heartbreaking to be so close. The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament.
“I would like to thank them all โ and also give my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful fans here in the USA and at home. We felt your support every step of the way and we are all so disappointed not to go further.”
