Christian Pulisic was arguably one of the most disappointing stars at the 2026 World Cup.
Touted before the tournament as a big name to watch for the United States Men’s National Team at a home World Cup, Pulisic did very little to live up to the ‘Captain America’ moniker that had been bestowed upon him by USMNT fans.

The 27-year-old notched an assist in the USA’s emphatic 4-1 win over Paraguay in their campaign opener but was forced off with a calf injury after just 45 minutes.
Having missed the 2-0 victory over Australia, which sealed the States Group D victory and their ticket to the knockout rounds, Pulisic would get 32 minutes in the legs in the 3-2 defeat to Turkiye.
While he played 88 minutes of the 2-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina, he didn’t record any goal contributions, and then limped off with injury in their Round of 16 defeat to Belgium, leaving the field in tears.
He faced immense criticism from USMNT legend Landon Donovan, while two-time World Cup winner with the USWNT Carli Lloyd questioned his commitment to the national team, indirectly telling him to “rest when your playing career is over.”
Of course, news later emerged that Pulisic had in fact suffered a bone bruise and microfracture of the tibia/fibula, which is set to sideline him for several weeks.
But the fact of the matter is “the LeBron James of American soccer” didn’t deliver on the world stage, injured or not.
Pulisic’s marketability has plummeted
All those advertising companies who paid him the big bucks to be the face of their marketing campaigns ahead of the World Cup are probably regretting those decisions.
That, unfortunately, may now heavily impact the AC Milan star’s endorsement deals going forward, according to a report from Front Office Sports.
“Unfortunately, Pulisic is the biggest sports marketing dud since Reebok’s ‘Dan & Dave’ campaign for the 1992 Summer Olympics,” Michael McCarthy of FOS reported.
“That could spell serious challenges for Team Pulisic’s ability to attract corporate sponsors before the next World Cup.

“… The problem for him is that after being blamed for Team USA’s humiliating 4-1 loss to Belgium last Monday, the TV spots featuring him kept coming—and coming—all week.
“Another potential issue for Pulisic with marketers: He has the skills on the pitch, but he doesn’t have the personality off it. Pulisic doesn’t have the magnetism of other soccer star endorsers such as Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, or David Beckham.
“It always feels like he’d rather be doing something else—anything else—than speaking to a camera. Even in the Rocky-like Degree commercial that allegedly explores his personal ‘dream,’ he appears passive and uninterested. His line delivery is flat, almost bored.”
Pulisic reportedly commands an estimated $20 million annually through his endorsement deals, which includes the likes of sportswear brand Puma, as well as Volkwagen and confectionary juggernaut Hershey – where he hails from.
Furthermore, he was in a Degree deodorant ad, in which he speaks about creating a “legacy that people can look at and say that ‘this guy changed American soccer.'”
The ad has continued to be aired since the USMNT’s elimination from the tournament.
When the 2030 World Cup rolls around, Pulisic will be 31-years-old, but he may perhaps still be the most marketable figure on the team, perhaps other than Diego Luna.
Of course, Luna was viewed as one of the poster boys of the 2026 campaign, yet didn’t even get named to Mauricio Pochettino’s final 26-man squad, in another awkward blunder for marketing firms.
But it remains to be seen whether Pulisic can play a starring role in a comeback story, with his stock currently viewed as low among major advertisers, according to copywriter Ernest Lupinacci.
Lupinacci has written ads for the likes of Nike and ESPN, so is well-versed and experienced in marketing athletes, yet he told FOS: “Some men are born great. Some men achieve greatness. And some men have greatness thrust upon them.
“But, apparently, none of those men are named Christian Pulisic.”
Ouch.
