England cult hero Djed Spence won plaudits from Three Lions fans following his goal-saving tackle against Argentina in the World Cup semi-final.

Anthony Gordon had just given England the lead in Atlanta in the second-half of a tense match against the defending champions when wingerΒ Giuliano Simeone found himself running at goal down the right wing.

It looked for all the world that Simeone, son of former England nemesis Diego, would equalise, but Spence sprung from nowhere to intervene.

The full back, who has become a player synonymous with England’s World Cup run, ran in from left back and put in an impressive tackle to deny Simeone a shot at goal and save his side.

England fans lauded the Tottenham man’s efforts on social media, with one writing on X: ‘Djed Spence you are class!’

Another added: ‘DJED SPENCE KNIGHTHOOD. KNIGHT HIM NOW.’

A third posted: ‘DJED SPENCE WHAT A TACKLE YEAH MAN.’

Spence’s inclusion had raised eyebrows after a sub-par season in a Tottenham team that narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League.

But he has warranted his inclusion, whether he has played from the start or from the bench, with impressive performances against the likes of Mexico, Norway, and now Argentina.
