Arsenal latest: Julian Alvarez transfer update as star set to travel for medical

Julian Alvarez remains a top transfer target for Arsenal this summer

Arsenal look set for a busy few weeks in the summer transfer market as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown. Backed by an eye-watering £250million transfer budget, sporting director Andrea Berta and boss Mikel Arteta are working hard to strengthen the squad.

The Gunners have already secured defensive reinforcements by picking up ex-Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer. The club have also sealed a permanent deal for versatile defender Piero Hincapie, who spent last season on loan at the Emirates Stadium.

But Arsenal are also reportedly hunting for reinforcements in attack ahead of the new season. A host of big names including Morgan Rogers, Bradley Barcola and Vinicius Jr all linked with a move to north London.

With the rumour mill continuing to gather pace, football.london has rounded up the latest transfer developments.

Alvarez transfer update

England’s World Cup semi-final clash against Argentina on Wednesday evening is likely to carry added weight for Arsenal’s top brass. Among those expected to feature is Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, who has emerged as one of the Gunners’ primary attacking targets.

However, Arsenal may need to exercise patience if they wish to secure the Argentine international – unless the Three Lions emerge victorious in Atalanta. According to Argentine publication La Nacion, Alvarez has no plans to make any decisions regarding his club future until after the World Cup has finished, with the 26 year old entirely concentrated on representing his nation.

Thousands of Arsenal fans upgraded their matchday last season. This is how they did it.

The report suggests Arsenal will intensify their pursuit once the tournament concludes, when Alvarez will be “free to focus fully on his club future”. That could leave the Gunners working against the clock, with this summer’s expanded World Cup not reaching its finale until July 19.

Barcelona are said to remain Alvarez’s first-choice destination, though the La Liga champions are finding it difficult to reach a financial arrangement with Atletico Madrid, who point towards his substantial €500million (£426million) release clause. Argentine outlet Clarin Deportivo claims Arsenal are “following every movement” and will position themselves as a credible alternative should Barcelona be unable to strike a deal.

Star travels for medical

Leandro Trossard became a fan favourite amongst the Gunners support during last season’s title-winning campaign, most notably netting a vital late winner against West Ham United in May. But the Belgian is poised to conclude his three-and-a-half-year stay in north London this summer after Arsenal reached an agreement with Besiktas for the forward.

The 31-year-old has been given the green light to travel to Istanbul and undergo a medical with the Turkish club ahead of a £17million switch. Trossard leaves having netted 36 goals in 174 appearances since his arrival from Brighton in January 2023.

His departure is anticipated to pave the way for Arsenal to bring in a new left-sided forward, with Rogers and Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola amongst those touted as potential targets.
