Arsenal are facing the reality of a tricky summer transfer window made worse by their rivals’ spending
The transfer window has become a scary place but above all else an expensive one. That should come as no surprise when clubs like Arsenal, famed for being supposed ‘penny pinchers’ dropped more than £100million on Declan Rice and went on to reprise their role as Premier League champions with aims to dominate for years to come.
However, with the Rice deal, there was a reason behind the mad figure. Not only was Rice one of England’s best players, a homegrown talent with hundreds of games under his belt already, but with the two most competitive clubs in England at the time vying for him, it was always going to be that the triple-million-pound figure would emerge.
What is a surprise, however, is the potential of £386.2million being spent on just four players by two clubs. Tottenham Hotspur have already dropped £185million on Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, while Manchester City have now paid £116million for Elliot Anderson.

Further to that, The Athletic claims talks with City and Lille are ongoing, with a fee for Moroccan international Ayyoub Bouaddi to be roughly €100million (£85.2million). Bouaddi is 18 years old with fewer than 100 games at the senior level in France with Lille.
Yet if he signs, he would be second only to Rice in Arsenal’s all-time transfer fees paid. While for City, only Jack Grealish (£100million) and Anderson (£116million) would eclipse the move. Exceeding the €90million (£76.7million) City paid RB Leipzig for Josko Gvardiol in 2023.
The knock-on effect for Arsenal is nothing good. Suggestions that if they are to sign their two priority targets, Bruno Guimaraes and Morgan Rogers, it could end up costing them in excess of £200million for the pair if the selling clubs’ wishes are fulfilled.
football.london has reported that while Arsenal are willing to spend big in this window, they are reluctant to abandon their valuations of players. However, it might be that it becomes a ‘if you cannot beat them join them’ scenario if Mikel Arteta is to get the players he thinks will ensure the club can defend their status as Premier League champions.
The chaos extends beyond the Premier League. PSG are reportedly using the Anderson fee as a benchmark for the potential exit of Bradley Barcola, while Atletico Madrid have already knocked back €150million (£129million) for another Arsenal target, Julian Alvarez, from Real Madrid.
