A man was found with serious injuries after reports of a dog attack in a rural home in Australia, paramedics trated the 55-year-old on arrival but he died at the scene
A man has died after being attacked by a dog on a rural property in Australia.
Emergency crews rushed to Coonabarabran, about 350km northwest of Newcastle at roughly 10am on Sunday, July 12 after reports of a dog attack.
When officers arrived at Timor Road, they found the 55-year-old property owner with critical injuries.
He was treated at the scene but paramedics but sadly died a short time later.
Police euthanised the dog at the scene.
It was described by officers as medium to large in size, but its breed is unknown.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
The council issued a statement that it extended “its thoughts to everyone affected” but was “unable to comment on the circumstances” surrounding the attack as it was an active police matter.
The incident comes after Warrumbungle Shire Council urged residents to report aggressive dog behaviour in April as in the shire with a population of less than 10,000 one dog attack is reported per month.
In a statement earlier this year the council urged dog owners to “take responsibility for their dogs and help protect the community”.
“Many recent incidents have occurred when dogs have been allowed to roam or have escaped from their owner’s property,” the council said.
“While you may believe your dog would not attack, situations can change quickly, especially when a dog is unsupervised or under stress.”
