Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has disclosed that he was overcome with emotion and shed tears because he was deeply moved by his players’ relentless fighting spirit.
Recall that Argentina staged a historic 3-2 comeback against Egypt in the FIFA World Cup 2026, fighting back from a 2-0 deficit with just 11 minutes of normal time remaining.

Egypt took a commanding 2-0 lead through goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico. However, Lionel Messi, who had missed a first-half penalty, sparked the turnaround by assisting Cristian Romero’s 79th-minute header, followed by a brilliant volley to equalise.
With the game looking like going to extra time, Enzo Fernández secured the dramatic quarter-final berth with a stoppage-time header.
Reacting after the game, Scaloni was too emotional to continue his post-match press conference after the thrilling victory at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
“I always get emotional. Sometimes the tears come out,” Scaloni told reporters. “The tears came in the dressing room too. The boys even call me ‘the cry baby,’ but I don’t care.

“For all of us who played soccer for 20 years, to feel what we felt today again is incredible. I think most coaches who played soccer become coaches because of days like this, because of those emotions, that adrenaline.
“I always felt the game was on our side. Beyond the result, I don’t think the team was playing badly. We had chances.
“Against Cape Verde it was worse, we really looked in trouble. Today, even when it was 0-2, the feeling was that at some point we would get a chance and could turn it around. Today we played totally different soccer.”
