Manchester City star Rodri has apologized to Bernardo Silva following their heated altercation during Spain’s 1-0 over Portugal in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Things got heated between the two midfielders in stoppage time when Portugal was frantically searching for an equalizer. After Bernardo Silva missed a crucial header, Rodri approached him on the ground and gave a mocking, playful tap.

Bernardo immediately turned around, furious at the gesture, before other players stepped in to break up the confrontation just before the final whistle.
Rodri and Bernardo Silva have been close friends and longtime teammates at Manchester City. Following the tense, dramatic finish to the match, the defensive midfielder addressed his mistake directly.
Speaking after the game, Rodri stated that he apologized to Silva immediately on the pitch and noted that they quickly moved past it due to the long-standing trust and confidence they share.

“I made a mistake because I celebrated when he missed. I apologised to him immediately, and it was accepted because of the trust we have, that’s all.”
Merino’s goal means Spain are now through to the World Cup quarters for the first time since they lifted the trophy back in 2010, and De la Fuente’s charges will take on Belgium on July 10.
