French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has said she will run for the presidency in 2027 – just hours after she was ordered to wear an electronic tag following her embezzlement conviction.
“I can’t campaign with a tag,” the National Rally leader told French TV in an interview broadcast on Tuesday evening. “I want to pursue all legal avenues to defend my innocence in this case.”
The 57-year-old, who has already run three presidential campaigns, said she will appeal the ruling to France’s highest court and that the process will suspend the sentence that she wear the tag for a year.
The appeals court ruling cleared the way for Le Pen to run again by shortening a ban handed down by a court last year that kept her from seeking public office for five years.
But the court also said she must wear an electronic tag. While Le Pen previously said it would not be possible to campaign while wearing one, on Tuesday she made clear that she now believes that she will not be subjected to monitoring at all and that she will be vindicated in her appeal to the Cour de Cassation.
