America’s World Cup stars began their last-16 knockout game in style on Monday night after a military flyover wowed the crowds before kickoff.
A full house turned out to support the team against Belgium in Seattle, and a rousing rendition of the national anthem was topped off by four fighter jets roaring over the stadium.
On social media, fans were left feeling very patriotic by the military at the end of a big holiday weekend, with one writing: ‘That flyover was electric man, holy s***!’
Another added ‘GOOSEBUMPS listening to the national anthem and the flyover! Let’s go USMNT.’
A third wrote: ‘Nothing gives me chills more than a flyover, man.’
The incredible moment came with millions tuning in from home to see if America could reach the quarterfinals and match their best World Cup finish since 2002.
If they can get past Belgium, a huge last-eight clash against European champions Spain awaits back in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon.
It was revealed shortly before kickoff on Monday that the previous US game – which saw them beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last 32 – racked up a huge audience, second only to the Super Bowl in recent months.
FOX’s audience of 26.4 million made it the most-watched US soccer match in history, according to the broadcaster.
