President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian journalists and media organisations to resist becoming channels for the propaganda of terrorists and kidnappers, urging the press to uphold professionalism and place the nation’s interest above sensational reporting.
The President made the appeal on Thursday during the inaugural State House Press Corps Dinner held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he described the media as a vital partner in strengthening democracy and safeguarding national security.

Speaking before journalists covering the Presidency, Tinubu warned that irresponsible reporting could embolden criminal groups and undermine the country’s efforts to combat insecurity.
«“The media must resist the temptation of becoming megaphones for terrorists and kidnappers. We must protect our nation,” the President declared.»
Tinubu noted that Nigeria is confronting significant security challenges, including terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes, stressing that the actions of the media can either strengthen national unity or unintentionally aid those seeking to destabilise the country.
“They want us divided. They want you and me to be afraid of one another. We will not surrender to their whims and caprices,” he said, urging journalists to report responsibly while remaining committed to truth and accuracy.
While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to freedom of expression and press freedom, the President reminded media practitioners that these constitutional rights come with corresponding responsibilities.
According to him, the digital age has made credible journalism more important than ever, as misinformation and unverified content continue to spread rapidly across social media platforms.
Tinubu also acknowledged that his administration has received both commendation and criticism from the media, saying he welcomes constructive scrutiny that helps citizens understand government policies and national priorities.
“You must provide context and help citizens understand not just what has changed, but where we are headed,” he told members of the press corps.
The President described journalists and government officials as partners working towards the same objective of preserving democracy and promoting national development.
The event also featured the decoration of President Tinubu as the Grand Patron of the State House Press Corps, while outstanding journalists and media professionals were honoured for their contributions to journalism and public service.
As Nigeria continues its battle against insecurity, Tinubu’s message underscores the growing expectation that the media should inform the public without amplifying narratives capable of advancing the objectives of criminal and terrorist groups.
