Tottenham have agreed a deal to sign Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali after making an improved bid for his services.
Spurs have wrapped up their second major midfield signing of the past 24 hours. On Tuesday, the North London club reached a €98 million agreement with West Ham to bring in Mateus Fernandes.
Now, they have also reached a breakthrough in talks with Newcastle for Tonali. Reports earlier on Wednesday revealed that Spurs had improved their offer for the Italy international after having an opening bid rejected.
The offer was reported to have clocked in at just over €100m. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the package that has now been agreed can rise to a whopping €117m with bonuses. More than €100m will be paid to Newcastle upfront.
The Magpies, who previously insisted that they did not want to sell the 26-year-old, have understandably caved. Tonali wanted out, and they will now pocket a handsome profit after paying at least €58.9m (some reports have claimed the fee was higher) for the midfielder.
Tonali to join Tottenham
Now that an agreement has been reached, Tottenham have broken their club record twice in two days. Fernandes’ €98m move, which has yet to be confirmed, was already a record, only to be surpassed by Tonali.
The pair of midfielders will become Tottenham’s fourth and fifth signings of the summer, respectively. Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have joined as free agents, while Jan Paul van Hecke has been signed from Brighton for €60m.
All told, Spurs are set to pay €275m on three players. They are finally acting like a big club in the transfer market, which will surely be welcomed by supporters after the frugal spending of the Daniel Levy era. It is unlikely that Tottenham’s summer business will stop there, however.
Many fans believe that signing a striker should also be on the agenda, with Richarlison, who may leave, and previous record signing Dominic Solanke not offering enough firepower for a club that want to get back into the Champions League.
Tonali was also a target for Arsenal, Man City and Man Utd. However, free-spending Spurs have now won the race for his signature, with the other suitors baulking at Newcastle’s hefty valuation.
