Qatar says frozen Iranian funds remain withheld as US-Iran Talks Continue

Qatar has confirmed that no frozen Iranian funds have been transferred to Tehran, stressing that any future release of the assets will depend on progress in negotiations between Iran and the United States.

In a statement on Monday, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said US officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to visit Doha for meetings with mediators to discuss developments in the ongoing negotiations.

The ministry added that technical discussions between Washington and Tehran have continued without interruption, with mediators working to facilitate the talks.

Qatar also rejected reports that the $6 billion in frozen Iranian assets had already been transferred.

“The issue of the frozen funds is linked to the progress of negotiations between Washington and Tehran,” the ministry said, adding that any transfer would require agreement by both parties.

The ministry also highlighted the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, describing its reopening and the restoration of normal shipping as key priorities.

It said Qatar is coordinating closely with Oman on efforts to ensure safe navigation through the strategic waterway, including mine-clearance operations.

“Qatar’s priority is the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of mines,” the ministry said.

It added that freedom of navigation is a fundamental right for all Gulf states and that any disruption to maritime traffic through the strait is unacceptable.

The ministry also welcomed France’s participation in efforts to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz and said current diplomatic efforts are focused on restoring regional security and stability following the recent conflict.

According to the statement, a direct communication channel has been used to help de-escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and contain recent confrontations while negotiations continue.
