US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the Trump administration will remain “completely aligned” with its Gulf allies as negotiations with Iran move forward.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio said his regional tour was aimed at consulting Gulf partners and ensuring they were involved in discussions surrounding the US-Iran agreement.
“We want them to know, and we want to reiterate, and begin to talk to them and engage them in conversations about every decision that’s made with regards to this negotiation,” he said.
Rubio also stressed that Washington would not pursue any agreement that “undermines the security of our allies, our longstanding allies, in the region”.
His comments come ahead of a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting in Bahrain, where the memorandum of understanding with Iran and regional security are expected to top the agenda.
