Chief Executive Officer of the Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board, Yusuf Ali, has expressed confidence that Team Nigeria will deliver one of its strongest performances yet at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The former Nigerian long jumper believes the country’s athletes are on track to surpass the medal haul recorded at previous editions of the Games.

“We are confident Team Nigeria will do better than before,” Yusuf Ali said.
The athletics great revealed that preparations for the Games are progressing as planned, with the Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure Nigerian athletes are fully equipped for the challenge ahead.
According to him, the focus has been on giving athletes the right support to maximise their medal prospects across various sports.
“Our preparations are geared towards achieving better results and winning more medals,” he added.
Yusuf Ali expressed confidence in the quality of athletes currently emerging across different disciplines, insisting Nigeria has the talent to compete with the best nations in the Commonwealth.
He also reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to creating an environment where elite athletes can thrive ahead of major international competitions.
“We are ready, and we believe our athletes will make the country proud,” he stated.
Nigeria has traditionally been one of Africa’s strongest performers at the Commonwealth Games, particularly in athletics, wrestling, weightlifting and boxing, and Yusuf Ali believes the next edition presents another opportunity for Team Nigeria to raise the bar.
