Xabi Alonso must make brutal Chelsea transfer decision despite ‘dream’ admission

Trevoh Chalobah is being strongly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer with the Chelsea defender having plenty of admirers from across Europe

After signing his latest contract extension in November 2022, Trevoh Chalobah spoke about fulfilling his “dream” by prolonging his Chelsea career. With that same deal set to expire in just over two years’ time, the Blues have a big decision to make this summer.

Chalobah seems happy at Chelsea – the club he has been playing for since Under-9 level – yet a decision simply has to be made this summer. One way or another, Chalobah cannot be in the same situation going into next season.

The Blues either need to sell this summer or face the prospect of the 26-year-old defender entering the final 24 months of his contract. Chalobah will lose significant value if he is allowed to do that – and there are no signs, at the time of writing, that the west London club are planning on extending his deal beyond 2028.

Chalobah was an ever-present figure in Chelsea’s poor 2025/26 season – featuring 47 times across all competitions. While he was by no means the Blues’ worst central defender last term, he failed to reach the sort of level Xabi Alonso and BlueCo want in the long term.

As a third/fourth-choice centre-back, Chalobah is perfect. His love for the club, too, makes him less likely to kick up a fuss over a lack of first-team football. He has shown an admirable level of professionalism over the years when he has not been a regular starter at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s treatment of their academy graduate has not always been the best and they have been, rightfully, criticised for that in the past. This summer, the Blues should make a decision – that on the face of it, seems brutal – that will benefit Chalobah in the long run.

Chalobah needs to go somewhere where he can be the main man. A leader. He isn’t going to be that at Chelsea unfortunately – and he may fall down the pecking order this summer.

If Levi Colwill was fit for a significant chunk of time last season, it is likely Chalobah would have struggled more for minutes. Next season, Chelsea will be hoping to have a fit and available Colwill for as much of the campaign as possible. Next to him, the club are looking for his long-term partner.

Sources say Chelsea are prioritising signing a starting-level central defender to get the best out of Colwill – someone who remains front and centre of BlueCo’s project at Stamford Bridge. The fact they do not see Chalobah as that is why the defender should consider departing this summer.

Crystal Palace, football.london understands, remain keen on Chalobah after his loan spell during the 2024/25 season was cut short due to the Blues needing defensive cover. Como, according to reports, are also interested in Chalobah with Cesc Fabregas said to be a big admirer of the England international.

It seems, with two years left to run on his deal, the natural time for Chelsea and Chalobah to part ways. It also seems the right time.
