The Blue Sharks of Cape Verde have equaled the feat achieved by Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions and Teranga Lions of Senegal at the World Cup following their draw with Uruguay.
Featuring in their second group game of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Cape Verde held two-time world champions Uruguay to a 2-2 draw.
Cape Verde also forced 2010 World Cup winners Spain to a goalless draw in their first ever fixture.
According to Stats Foot, Cape Verde (two draws) becomes the third African nation to have lost none of its first two matches in World Cup history after Cameroon in 1982 (two draws) and Senegal in 2002 (one win, one draw).
Kevin Pina gave Cape Verde in the 21st minute, by scoring a stunning long-range free-kick that went through the two-man Uruguay wall.
But with just one minute left in the first half Maxi Araujo drew Uruguay level, netting his second of the tournament.
Then in the sixth minute of added time in the first half Araujo turned provider by setting up Agustin Canobbio to put Uruguay 2-1 ahead.
Cape Verde were not deterred and levelled in the 61st minute thanks to Helio Varela. Mathias Olivera’s poor square pass saw goalkeeper Fernando Muslera rush out of his goal but Varela flicked the ball over his head and scored into an empty net.
