Iran has announced that it has closed the Strait of Hormuz again.
The country’s joint military command cited Israeli attacks in Lebanon and US “bad faith” and “its clear breach of its commitments” by failing to end the war. The statement released on state TV on Saturday also warned that “if the aggression continues, subsequent steps have been planned”.
It comes as Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon on Saturday killed at least 16 people, including two children. Seven people remained trapped under the rubble after the strikes hit the southern town of Nabatieh and nearby villages, Lebanon’s National News Agency said.
A heavy exchange between Israel and Hezbollah on Friday killed at least 47 people in Lebanon and four Israeli soldiers.
An Israeli military official said Hezbollah had fired more than 50 projectiles at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon overnight. The army said it struck dozens of Hezbollah targets and militants in southern Lebanon, including rocket-launching positions and Hezbollah command centres.
Hezbollah said in a statement on Saturday that while it remained committed to the ceasefire, Israel violated it several times on Friday night. The group added that it would repel attacks by Israeli troops.
In Lebanon, Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,900 people and injured 11,600 others since the latest conflict began in March 2, the Lebanese Ministry of Health says.
Around a million people remain displaced, while dozens of communities in the south have been completely destroyed.
