The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has released the official timetable for the 2026 Commonwealth Games Trials, with the nation’s top athletes set to compete for places on Team Nigeria from June 20 to 22.

The three-day event will serve as the final selection competition for athletes seeking qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, bringing together established stars and emerging talents across track and field disciplines.
Competition begins on Saturday, June 20, with the women’s 5,000m final and men’s discus final, followed by the opening heats of the men’s and women’s 100m events.
The morning session will also feature the men’s high jump final and heats of the men’s and women’s 400m races.
Attention will shift to several key field events in the afternoon, including the women’s long jump and women’s shot put finals. The men’s and women’s 800m finals, women’s 100m heats, men’s triple jump final and men’s 5,000m final are also scheduled for the opening day.
Day Two, on June 21, will showcase the men’s and women’s 10,000m race walk events alongside a series of field event finals. Athletes will compete in the women’s javelin, women’s triple jump, and men’s and women’s hammer throw events.
The second day will also feature heats of the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles before the highly anticipated semi-finals of the men’s and women’s 100m and 400m races in the afternoon session.
One of the major highlights of the trials will come later in the day with the finals of the men’s and women’s 100m events, where Nigeria’s fastest athletes will battle for national honours and Commonwealth Games qualification spots.
The final day of competition on June 22 opens with heats in the men’s 110m hurdles, women’s 100m hurdles and men’s and women’s 200m events.
The concluding afternoon session promises a thrilling finish, with finals scheduled in the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles, men’s javelin, women’s high jump, men’s and women’s 1,500m races, women’s discus, and men’s and women’s 400m events.
The trials will conclude with the finals of the men’s and women’s sprint hurdles and 200m races, providing athletes with one final opportunity to secure places on Team Nigeria for the Commonwealth Games.
With national pride and international representation at stake, the AFN expects the trials to produce intense competition and outstanding performances as athletes chase qualification standards and national team selection.
