Former Nigeria international Dimeji Lawal has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to resist the temptation of changing coaches, insisting Eric Chelle is the right man to lead the Super Eagles forward.
Lawal believes stability on the bench is exactly what Nigeria needs after missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“If the NFF stays with Eric Chelle, things will soon turn around,” Lawal said.
The former Super Eagles winger expressed confidence in the Franco-Malian tactician, describing him as the coach capable of restoring Nigeria’s fortunes.
According to Lawal, the signs under Chelle have been encouraging, and disrupting the rebuilding process would be a mistake.
“The future looks bright with him in charge,” he added.
Lawal called on the NFF to provide the coach with every support necessary to build a competitive team capable of challenging for major honours.
He stressed that developing a successful national team cannot happen overnight and requires consistency from both the coaching staff and the football authorities.
“You don’t build a great team in a short period. It takes time and patience,” he stated.
Chelle has overseen a gradual rebuilding of the Super Eagles since taking charge, introducing new players while implementing his tactical philosophy.
Despite the disappointment of missing the World Cup, Lawal believes continuity remains the key to ensuring Nigeria returns stronger for future international competitions.
His comments come amid continued discussions over the direction of the national team as preparations begin for the next qualification cycle and the Africa Cup of Nations.
