France coach Didier Deschamps has revealed that moving Michael Olise from left wing into a central position helped his side overcome a tough Senegal side.
Deschamps men had to dig deep to see off Senegal side 3-1, in their World Cup 2026 opening group tie on Tuesday.
While Kylian Mbappé finished the match with a brace, it was Olise who was named Player of the Match after an outstanding performance for Les Bleu.
Following a subdued first half from France, Olise came to life after the break, producing several moments of brilliance which contributed to his team’s victory.
The 23-year-old provided the creative spark Deschamps’ side had been lacking, most notably with a sensational pass to set up Mbappé’s opening goal.
The Bayern Munich winger was also involved in the buildup to the third goal also netted by Mbappe.
“It was good to win our first match against a very good Senegal team,” Deschamps said.

“We had some difficulties, we were wasteful at times too, but with a bit more precision we could have created more chances.
“The second half was much better after we moved Michael Olise into the middle, which tied everything together.
“The way he took the ball and his passing ability helped us find the strikers. The more he touches the ball, the better we are.
“I am really satisfied to win the first match because the way our group is set up made that very important.”
Commenting also on the performance of Mbappe, he added:”There are still people out there who will criticise him but he is an extraordinary player. Not everything came off for him, but he can win games in one moment.
“As captain, he does a lot for the squad on and off the field even if some people think he is selfish,” said Deschamps of Mbappe, who overtook Olivier Giroud to become France’s leading scorer with 58 goals from 99 caps.
“I am really pleased for him. He didn’t score in the warm-up friendly games but to break the record at the World Cup gives it more impact.”
Up next for France is a clash with Iraq on Monday in Philadelphia. Also on Tuesday Iraq suffered a 4-1 defeat to Norway in their first group fixture.
