A former Tottenham and England star has had his say on the north London club’s pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali
Teddy Sheringham believes that if Tottenham could sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle then it would set the standard as Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal did.
Spurs have held positive talks with the Italy international’s entourage ahead of making any potential bid to Newcastle although they are likely to face rivals for Tonali’s signature with Arsenal among those having shown interest in the 26-year-old. The Magpies are expected to slap a price tag on Tonali nearing £100million as the midfielder has three years left on his contract as well as a club option to extend it by another 12 months.
It will not be an easy transfer to get near the finish line, let alone over it, but former Tottenham, Manchester United and England striker Sheringham believes that Tonali is the calibre of player his old club must target to join Roberto De Zerbi’s squad if they are to change their current course.
“About three years ago I said that Manchester United needed to go and sign Harry Kane and Declan Rice as soon as they were available. United didn’t get either of them. Tottenham are in that situation now. You have to go and get the big players now to lead by example, players that come into a club and set the standard, like what Harry has done at Bayern Munich and Declan has done at Arsenal.

“You need players who will put the shirt on and fill it out like Eric Cantona did when he went to United. Players who look like they deserve to be there. ‘Follow me, boys!'” said Sheringham.
He added: “Tottenham need to go out and find those players. Go over the top to them and say we’re building something here, and I want you to lead it. Come and play for us. Don’t go and play for Manchester United.
“The most important thing for Tottenham to remember is that if you just bring in the same sort of players that you always have, that you’ve already got, and they’re all good players, you’ll end up in the same position again, and that’s not good enough for Tottenham at the moment. They need to go and bring some leaders into the camp and change the whole picture at Tottenham.”
Teddy Sheringham was speaking on behalf of Boyle Sports with their World Cup betting and odds this summer.
