Donald Trump has told Vladimir Putin that an end to the war in Ukraine is “vital” and that he is prepared to help broker peace.

The pair spoke during a 55-minute call as Trump celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday, with the US president telling Putin that an end to fighting in the region could herald a “new quality of US-Russia ties,” Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri ‌Ushakov said.

Trump also claimed the US was nearing a peace deal with Iran, and that he “expects the results of the difficult but ultimately successful negotiations can be made public already today,” Ushakov added.
