Marc Cucurella is set to depart Chelsea for a £51.7million move to Real Madrid this summer
Chelsea have reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Marc Cucurella for a deal worth up to £51.7million.
Football.london understands that an initial fee of £47.4m was agreed with around £4.3m in add-ons also secured. The official documents are still to be finalised but the deal is expected to be completed within the week.
Chelsea were not actively looking to sell but it is understood that Cucurella was open to the right move and was keen to depart Stamford Bridge. The defender had only signed a new deal with the Blues last summer and still has three years left on it.
Atletico Madrid were also keen on the Spain international but Madrid have beaten their La Liga rivals to the 27-year-old’s signature. Cucurella has made 150 appearances since arriving at Chelsea in 2022 in a transfer from Brighton and Hove Albion.
The defender picked up the Conference League and Club World Cup during his tenure with the Blues and is currently representing Spain at the World Cup.
This news comes just after Cucurella admitted he was “inspired” by Xabi Alonso’s arrival at Chelsea. The defender was asked what he thought of the upcoming project under the new manager, to which he responded: “Yes. I’ve spoken with him and he inspired a lot of confidence in me.
“I’ve also spoken with (Alejandro) Grimaldo and Borja (Iglesias), who have worked with him, and they spoke very highly of him. The project seems very interesting.”
However, Cucurella was also coy about previous transfer speculation, telling Marca: “I’m not reading much and I’m not paying much attention. My agents already know they don’t have to tell me anything.
“I’m very happy where I am, and so is my family. Whatever happens, happens. Right now, I’m focused on the World Cup and enjoying this experience, which is my first and who knows if it will be my last.”
The defender will now miss out on working with Alonso as he heads to the manager’s last place of employment before he took up the reins at Stamford Bridge. The former Liverpool star spent under a year as the boss of Madrid, first joining in May 2025.
Alonso left the Spanish giants by mutual consent in January, one day after a 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa final.
