Edo Queens Boost NWFL Premiership Title Hopes with Derby Win Over Rivers Angels 

2023/2024 champions Edo Queens strengthened their chances of retaining the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Rivers Angels in a thrilling Matchday 4 clash of the Super Six playoffs in Port Harcourt.

The highly anticipated South-South Derby at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium lived up to expectations as both sides battled intensely for crucial points in the title race.

Edo Queens took the lead in the 39th minute through Precious Oscar, who calmly finished to hand the Benin-based side a deserved advantage before half-time.

Rivers Angels responded strongly after the break and found their equaliser in the 72nd minute when substitute Abasiofon Uwah made an immediate impact from the bench to level proceedings for the hosts.

However, Edo Queens quickly restored their lead just five minutes later as Chioma Moses struck decisively in the 77th minute to seal all three points for the defending champions.

The victory ensured Edo Queens maintained their winning momentum in their Super Six campaign, while boosting their hopes of winning the NWFL Premiership crown with nine points in the bag

The highly explosive encounter saw both teams recording six shots on target each.

Edo Queens finished with 15 fouls compared to Rivers Angels’ 13, while the hosts edged corner kicks 3-2.

Earlier in the day, defending champions Bayelsa Queens defeated FC Robo Queens 2-0 thanks to goals from Kindness Ifeanyi and substitute Ojiyovwi Kesiena, while Abia Angels and Nasarawa Amazons settled for a goalless draw, a dent on the title chase of Nasarawa Amazons.

The Super Six playoffs will return on Sunday with final day matches in Port Harcourt as the race for the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership title is heads to a superb finale.
