Bayelsa United FC have been disbanded by the Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency Douye Diri, following the club’s relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) to the Nigeria National League (NNL), reports Completesports.com reports.
Governor Diri also announced the dissolution of the Management Committee led by Tarilaye Amankwe and the technical crew led by Meremu Okara, as well as the players.
The embittered Governor said on Wednesday that it was ‘painful and sad’ that the club has found itself back to where it started, the Nigeria National League, NNL.
Diri Laments Bayelsa United’s Relegation From NPFL
In an emotion-ladden broadcast, Governor Diri lamented that Bayelsa United eventually got relegated despite his earlier warning.
“At the end of this (2025/2026), last football season, we found ourselves back to the beginning of where we started”, an embittered Governor Diri began in his broadcast on Wednesday.

“Sadly, our football club, Bayelsa United, has been relegated again to the second division of our country’s league.
“And I was making statements and appealing to players and the board, coaches and everybody, that they should ensure that they did everything possible so that our club, (Bayelsa United), remained in the Premier League division, with the kind of investment that we are carrying out in sports development, particularly against the backdrop of investing in the 30, 000 capacity World Class Stadium that is not actually for us today but it is indeed for the future generation of Bayelsans.
“And today, I want to bring, I want to bring to pass what I said and I told them when we had the Governor’s Prosperity Cup and it was not a threat, all I wanted them to do was to make sure that they do not go on relegation.
“But now that they have gone on relegation, Bayelsa United Football Club is hereby disbanded, the board is also disbanded, and the coaches have been sacked and an interim body that will oversee the affairs of the club will be announced in the nearest future to reorganise Bayelsa United FC. And Bayelsa United will be reorganised, new coaches will come on board to ensure that in the next football season, we regain our promotion back to the Premier League.
“So, all coaches, players and board members and players, are all affected by this order. Every property in their possession should be handed over to the Honourable Commissioner , Ministry of Sports Development”.
