The World Cup 2026 gets underway this week and there will be plenty of action for football fans to get their teeth stuck into.
This edition marks the tournament’s first-ever expansion to 48 teams, featuring 104 matches across 39 days, making it the biggest World Cup in history. The action begins on Thursday, June 11, with Mexico vs South Africa, and concludes on July 19 with the final.

The participating nations will be split into 12 groups of four teams, with the top two sides from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the new round of 32. From that point, every match will be a straight knockout tie.
There will be a remarkable 40 more matches than the Qatar World Cup in 2022, with fixtures taking place at 16 venues across the three nations. The World Cup groups were confirmed following the final draw in December and the conclusion of qualifying in March.
England, led by Thomas Tuchel, will be looking to end 60 years of hurt across the Atlantic, heading into the tournament as one of the favourites after several near misses under Gareth Southgate.
